Preparing to Study Abroad

Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity for any student. Being able to study in another country is an experience you will always remember. As exciting as it is, it’s important for any student to be fully prepared before heading abroad.

Through careful planning, your study abroad experience will end up being a positive and enjoyable one. It’s always good to start preparing several months before you plan on leaving. Remember this isn’t like a quick vacation; you’re going to be away from home for quite some time.

Get the Paperwork Done

When studying abroad you’ll need a passport. If this is your first one then you will need to fill out the paperwork in person. Most United States Post Offices will allow you to fill out the paperwork there.

Also contact your insurance company to make sure you will be covered in that country. Some insurance companies won’t cover you, so get all the information before you leave.

Get Vaccinations

Which vaccination needed will depend on which country you’re going to. Contact your doctor or local health department to see which vaccinations are needed.

Get Finances in Order

As soon as you’ve decided to study abroad start saving up! There’s a good chance you won’t have a job so make sure you have enough money to make it through the program. Make sure to get the right currency as soon as you get there.

Learn About the Culture & Language

You’re spending a lot of time in another country so learn their language and culture. By knowing these things it will make your stay there a lot better for you.
