Kashmir On A Boat

Rulers have called the area now known as Kashmir “Paradise on Earth.”  The Valley, pinned between several mountain ranges, is one of the most beautiful spots on earth and has become a favorite place to travel.  Those interested in experiencing its misty mountains, fragrant gardens, sparkling waterfalls, endless lakes and rich history know that there is only one way to do this authentically – by staying on one of the traditional houseboats that have made the region famous.
While houseboats may have been originally developed as an answer to a need for reliable housing, today they have seen a complete makeover and are now primarily marketed to tourists, although many natives still rely on them as a primary living space.  While it may seem like a houseboat is a houseboat, in Kashmir, there are actually several styles to choose from – there is a houseboat for everyone.
Fidous:  These are the largest of the houseboats found in Kashmir.  They are very upscale and lush.  Typically, these boats have three suits, a deck and a living area.  They are considered floating palaces.
Khushal: slightly smaller than the Fidous, a Khushal may be considered as a 3-star hotel.  With two bedroom suites and fewer luxuries, they are ideal for those on a budget or those with families.
Nishat:  The most intimate of the houseboats – Nishat’s are popular for honeymooners.  With one-bedroom suites and a set of amenities similar to the Khushal, Nishat’s are small and intimate.
There simply is no better way to experience Kashmir than by staying on an authentic houseboat.  By choosing the one that is best suited to your budget and needs, it is possible to enjoy not only the beauty and wonder of Kashmir but also its unique housing history.
